Dylan Spencer Kenney

Born and raised in the West Village, NYC. A multi-media and social practice artist, developing an academic program for adult education, inviting second chances in her advanced work at The Center for Public Action at Bennington College; Indeed an anomaly, she returned at 40 to complete what she had started.

The Bennington Completion Program is dedicated to her oldest daughter, Grace, who graduated from Bennington College in May 2022, crossing the finish line and inspiring her mother the entire way. Dylan’s graduation date is June 3, 2023.

Art Statement:

“Dylan's work is dynamic and provocative in many ways but specifically designed around gracefully crafting language around creating avenues for a conversation about the uncomfortable. Dylan’s later work gives you a window into her personal life. Dylan recognized that allowing her life to be open to others allowed for a conversation on a different level. She states, “The work, the practice of making it, the element of display, is about connection.”

The witness is the artist.

I am not one thing. Sculptures are never one thing, even when they are one material. When I escape from my ego, I can find dignity in the art-making process.

I live at the intersection of these two questions. Can I be an artist without academic experience? Do I have a responsibility as an activist to pursue advocacy through the visual arts?

Sculpture's form creates choreography for a structural dance; Art-making is about relationships. Space, land, material, and ultimately human engagement. Does the material change that engagement? When is the witness the artist?

""OPEN TO THE PUBLIC""

""Open to the Public"" is a series of sculptures. This work resides at the intersection of visual arts and cultural advocacy, a community engagement form in social practice. As an artist and a 40-year-old Bennington college student, I appreciated using creativity to influence social good. The piece internally examines what being open to the public means if the public does not know they are welcome. When you approach the linear lines of my sculpture, you notice a wooden attachment; on such is a laser-engraved QR code. This will allow the audience to interact and see Bennington Colleges, EVENTS website page, where all Open To The Public events are updated monthly (this page was already established.) I am the creator in all capacities—current Instillation Locations: Powers Market, The Village School of North Bennington, and The Left Bank. One remaining is available for the NB sculpture show.
