Mark Eliot Schwabe

I have been working in three dimensional media for the better part of 60 years. Mostly, I have worked in metals.

I began by helping my Dad (James Author Schwabe) in his workshop. He made jewelry and precious metal sculptures for many high end clients; Cartier, NY was his highest volume customer.

I learned metal working skills from him and eventually, did the production work on many of his designs that became Cartier product.

As a graduate student at the State University of NY at Albany, I had the extraordinary opportunity to study with one of the worlds most prominent metal sculptors; Richard Stankiewicz (part of the ""New York School"" of the 1950's). Stankiewicz was a pioneer in metal assemblage sculpture. The first thing that he taught me was to weld with an electric arc welder (I was already a proficient oxey acetylene welder & brazer.) More important than the technical skills, he taught me to ""see"" .... to observe the essence of objects, and to have a vision of an object before it was created. This skill has served me well in the many years I have been making sculpture since.

Over those years I have created six distinct, unique, bodies of work: ""Perfection is Illusive"" sculptures (mostly metals), ""Ignecia"" sculptures (metals & concrete), ""Markie Moose"" (metal jewelry), ""Transported"" sculpture & jewelry (metals), ""Powerful Women"" (small sculptures; metals [w/bases of various materials]) and ""Futurescapes"" (sculptures made of wood, paint & metals).

Of this lifetime of work, I believe that my current creations,""Futurescapes"" (depicting the ravages that will befall the earth if humankind does not deal with climate change ... and do it fast) ... are the most significant.
