Jo-Ann Brody
For the past several decades, Brody has worked with series of figures echoing her fascination with the society and place of women. Her practice revolves around the female form concentrating on gesture and stance often in installation. Over the years her figures have evolved from small clay women to life sized standing cement figures and papier mache torsos and figures. They are women; they provide a means to explore her life through stance and gesture, through stories and relationships.
Line rather than mass is the predominant consideration in this work. Inspiration is informed by the work of Modigliani and Matisse.
Brody’s work is in clay and in cement or the combination of these earth materials. Recent work is in papièr maché with the addition of color and texture often literally from text.
